I grew up in Sydney, Australia before moving with my family to Oklahoma. With my parents both being professional musicians, music has always been a constant in my life. In grade school, I learned to play the violin and participated in honours orchestras. After high school, I attended the University of Oklahoma and received a bachelor’s of science in physics and a master’s degree in oceanography from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
During my undergraduate degree, I took my first furniture making course at the Ploughshare Institute in Waco, Texas. I furthered my furniture and chairmaking education after graduate school at Roy Underhill’s Woodwright’s School. At the Lost Art Press storefront, I learned the making of Welsh stick chairs from Chris Williams.
After making furniture, I wanted to combine my love of woodworking with my history with the violin. I began an apprenticeship at Oklahoma Strings Violin Shop. At the shop I was mentored in making my first violin and in instrument repair and restoration.
